When Is It Time To Evacuate Your Business During a Fire?

Mold in Adair County
8/3/2022 (Permalink)
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Water Damage Strikes your Commercial Property.
1/12/2021 (Permalink)
Water trying to take over your commercial structure.
Water damage can strike your commercial property at any time. Water damage can sideline your business, regardless if the damage occurs from a winter storm event or a broken water line. Every hour spent cleaning up is an hour of lost revenue and productivity. Water damage in a commercial can potentially prevent you from conducting business as normal and it may put the safety and health everyone using the building at risk. If you find signs of water damage, it is vital that you act right away by calling SERVPRO ® of Kirksville is here to help. ®
Common causes of water damage in commercial structures are:
Damaged Windows.
In many commercial buildings, water damage is caused by windows that are not properly sealed. If windows are damaged, it can cause moisture to seep inside. This can trigger many issues, including warped drywall and wood along with potential mold growth. Regularly resealing the windows is crucial because caulk may breakdown as time passes.
Damaged Pipes.
Issues related to broken pipes can be caused by an array of issues. They can occur because of changes in pressure, cold weather, and deteriorated sewer drains and water supply lines. Some of the signs of damaged pipes in your building include:
- Musty odors
- Loose tiles
- Cracked tiles
- Stains on the floors and walls
- Bulging walls
Detecting damaged pipes is something that can be quite challenging. Normally requires some type of inspection utilizing special equipment such as thermal imaging cameras, moisture meters and borescopes.
The Foundation.
If the gutters of your commercial building are not cleaned properly or regularly, they may become clogged potentially overflow. This will cause water to leak into the property through the roof or the foundation. A common sign of leaks in a commercial building foundation include puddles close by or framing that is wet. Improper drainage systems may also cause damage in the foundation.
Roof Leaks.
A roof that is leaking may result in water stains and potential mold, compromised structural integrity, and fire hazards resulting from faulty wiring. Exposure to snow and heavy rains make roofs very vulnerable to serious damage. Also, if ice or snow is not removed properly, it can trigger even more water damage for a commercial property.
If you notice water damage or related issues, it is best to contact SERVPRO® of Kirksville right away. We can help reduce the issues that may arise and ensure that your business or building does not experience significant downtime and can continue "Like it never even happened." ® 660-665-3390.

Have Lingering Smell of Smoke?
2/28/2020 (Permalink)
Your business or home have the smell of smoke still? That smell is soot that has settled on the items in your business. Often a business owner believe that they have removed the source of the smell, but the scent remains. When soot stays on an object, even if you cannot see the soot, there will be an odor.
There are two types of smoke, wet smoke and dry smoke. After a fire there will be different kinds of soot residue due to the different types of smoke. Before SERVPRO of Kirksville trained technicians can begin, they will perform a pretest to determine the type of smoke damaged that has occurred. Based on the data that is gathered during testing, the SERVPRO technicians will determine which cleaning procedures are done. This pretesting and the chosen restoration process will protect your belongings.
Some additional information for you:
DRY SMOKE- high temperatures, fast burning- heat rises there for the smoke rises. Heavy odor.
Materials: wood, furniture, papers type textiles.
Protein Fire Residue- discolors paint and varnish. Essentially invisible.
Materials: a product of the materials evaporating not necessarily the fire itself.
WET SMOKE– smoldering, sticky, smeary, low heat. Harsh odor
Materials: rubber plastic
Let SERVPRO of Kirksville professionals come to your business and do an inspection for soot damage after the fire. We will be able to use our deodorization tools and cleaning techniques to return your business back to preloss condition.
For any questions about smoke odors and soot please feel free to call or text SERVPRO of Kirksville, 660-665-3390.
When Fire and Smoke Have Taken Over!
1/15/2020 (Permalink)
Fire and Smoke damage can be devastating! We hope you never have to experience a fire; in case you do, we are here to help and will walk you through the steps to bring your home back to preloss condition.
There are numerous ways fire damage can devastate homes and businesses. It’s destructive and can leave lingering odors behind not to mention the extensive water damage that results from the firefighter’s efforts to extinguish the flames. The professionals at SERVPRO of Kirksville, have specialized training, equipment, and experience that will restore your home or place of work back to the way it looked before or even better!
The first steps for SERVPRO of Kirksville to take your home back to preloss condition.
Step 1: Initial Inspection-
If possible, it’s always good to have your Insurance adjuster present during the first initial inspection but it’s not necessary. We work for you and will work with your adjuster to make the restoration process go as smoothly as possible. It is best if we can all meet at the same time so we can all be on the same page regarding the cleaning and restoration of your home or business. Once the inspection date is set, our Production Manager will meet with you at your home or business to inspect the damages and discuss the cleaning process. They will guide you through step by step, so you know what to expect.
Once the inspection is complete, they will go over the authorization form and a customer information form to be signed prior to beginning the restoration process.
Step 2: Content and Structure Cleaning-
SERVPRO of Kirksville has the knowledge, professional equipment and ability to eliminate all traces of a fire. Besides the easily accessible areas, we also examine wall cavities, ductwork, crawl spaces, and plumbing chases to establish whether they also suffered any smoke or fire damage. We will make sure that all fire damage is cleaned, repaired, or removed and leave your home or business "Like it never even happened." Because that is the SERVPRO way!
After you, the Adjustor and SERVPRO of Kirksville have chosen the correct course for your home. SERVPRO will begin the cleaning process of your home or business. Depending on the severity of damage it may be necessary to box up your belongings and bring them back to our cleaning facility. This enables us to clean your contents in a clean environment while the structure cleaning and demoing is being completed. Once all cleaning is finalized of both the structure and your contents, we will bring your belongings back to your home.
Step 3: FINAL WALK Though –
When the cleaning is complete our production manager will do a final walkthrough to address any questions or concerns you may have. Once that is complete, they will present you with a Certificate of Satisfaction form for you to fill out and sign. Your satisfaction is very important to us and we appreciate any feedback you have regarding your experience with SERVPRO of Kirksville.
It is our SERVPRO goal to ensure that our customers understand the process and are happy they call us to make their loss “Like it never even happened.”
When Is It Time To Evacuate Your Business During a Fire?

Below is an explanation from OSHA on when it is time for you to evacuate the building following a fire, smoke, water, or gas leak. View the full text here: https://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3088.pdf
"In the event of an emergency, local emergency officials may order you to evacuate your premises. In some cases, they may instruct you to shut off the water, gas, and electricity. Is the Smoke Detector in Your Business Up To Date?
9/4/2019 (Permalink)
Read below about the importance of fire detectors in your home or place of business and follow the link to find out if you are taking all the right steps to ensure your business has the best practices. https://www.ocwr.gov/sites/default/files/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/fastfacts_smokedetectors.pdf
Early fire detection can mean the difference between life and death. The fastest way to alert people to the existence of a fire is by means of an automatic detection device such as a smoke detector.
A smoke detector works by detecting tiny smoke particles given off when something burns. When it detects a fire, it sounds an alarm or activates the fire alarm system, signifying the presence of fire, as well as to the need to exit the building. Under limited circumstances, a fire alarm system may be programmed to allow a three-minute delay to investigate an area where a detector has been activated. During this time, the fire alarm system may initiate other actions such as closing fire doors and activating smoke controls. If three minutes pass without an assessment of the potential fire, Life Safety Code requires that the building’s fire alarm system be programmed to automatically trigger an evacuation alarm.
Developing Your Job-site Emergency Action Plan
9/4/2019 (Permalink)
Read this excerpt from OSHA on developing an emergency action plan, and follow the website for more tips. https://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3088.pdf
"When developing your emergency action plan, it’s a good idea to look at a wide variety of potential emergencies that could occur in your workplace. It should be tailored to your worksite and include information about all potential sources of emergencies. Developing an emergency action plan means you should do a hazard assessment to determine what, if any, physical or chemical hazards in your workplaces could cause an emergency. If you have more than one worksite, each site should have an emergency action plan.
At a minimum, your emergency action plan must include the following:
¦ A preferred method for reporting fires and other emergencies;
¦ An evacuation policy and procedure;
¦ Emergency escape procedures and route assignments, such as floor plans, workplace maps, and safe or refuge areas; What should your emergency action plan include?
¦ Names, titles, departments, and telephone numbers of individuals both within and outside your company to contact for additional information or explanation of duties and responsibilities under the emergency plan;
¦ Procedures for employees who remain to perform or shut down critical plant operations, operate fire extinguishers, or perform other essential services that cannot be shut down for every emergency alarm before evacuating; and
¦ Rescue and medical duties for any workers designated to perform them. You also may want to consider designating an assembly location and procedures to account for all employees after an evacuation. AID FIRST AID FIRST 3
In addition, although they are not specifically required by OSHA, you may find it helpful to include in your plan the following:
¦ The site of an alternative communications center to be used in the event of a fire or explosion; and
¦ A secure on- or offsite location to store originals or duplicate copies of accounting records, legal documents, your employees’ emergency contact lists, and other essential records."
CDC Mold Prevention Tips for Your Business
8/15/2019 (Permalink)
Keeping your business mold free might sound impossible, however there are ways to reduce the chance of having a mold issue occur in your business. The following tips have been taken from the Center For Disease Control's Website. For More information go to https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2016-10/documents/moldguide12.pdf
MOLD PREVENTION TIPS
- Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
- Be sure your home has enough ventilation. Use exhaust fans which vent outside your home in the kitchen and bathroom. Make sure your clothes dryer vents outside your home.
- Fix any leaks in your home’s roof, walls, or plumbing so mold does not have moisture to grow.
- Clean up and dry out your home thoroughly and quickly (within 24–48 hours) after flooding.
- Add mold inhibitors to paints before painting.
- Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products.
- Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked and cannot be dried promptly. Consider not using carpet in rooms or areas like bathrooms or basements that may have a lot of moisture.

Does Your Adair County Business Have a Mold Problem?
10/24/2018 (Permalink)
