When a winter storm knocks your power out, you will need to use other sources for supplemental heat. When using these alternative sources, please keep in mind the dangers associated with them.
Open flames such as fire places need to have screens and adequate ventilation. You also need to make sure nothing is placed around the fireplace that could ignite.
Small kerosene or other gas heaters also poses potential threats. Be careful not to put the heaters in an area that would cause a trip hazard that could quickly ignite the surrounding area. Poor ventilation is also an important concern with dealing with these types of heaters. As the heaters burn they consume oxygen, and when placed in a small room with no ventilation this could pose a significant threat.
