Winter weather can play havoc on your home. While you are enjoying the fun of winter, snowball fights and hot cocoa, the cold weather is working against your home. Strong winter storms come with powerful winds, large amounts of snow even accumulation of ice. Many destructive impacts can come out of a single winter storm. Are you prepared for the coming winter? The array of hazards that can come from a winter storm are sometimes countless.
- Fires – While your home is nice & cozy most of winter, when you lose power you may be forced to find other methods to heat your home. If not handled correctly other sources of heat can be a possible fire hazard. Things like small personal heaters, flames from a fireplace, or even overheating the wood stove can place you and your home in danger.
- Home damage- Winter storms may come with freezing temperatures, high wind gusts, ice and large amounts of snow. All these things put your home at risk. Too much weight from the ice and snow may cause your roof to buckle. High winds blow around tree limbs and other debris can cause damage to your roof, siding, and windows. Snow and colder temperatures can turn even the smallest breach in your home into a water loss.
- Frozen plumbing- One of the most common water losses during the winter months are due to frozen water pipes. Several factors play a role in frozen pipes. One is not having a safe and correct heating source to prevent them from freezing. There may not be adequate insulation to accommodate the below freezing temperatures and the type of plumbing and the age of the plumbing materials may also be a factor for pipes to burst.
Melting snow and ice after a storm can also cause damage to the inside of your home or business.
