Fire and Smoke damage can be devastating! We hope you never have to experience a fire; in case you do, we are here to help and will walk you through the steps to bring your home back to preloss condition.
There are numerous ways fire damage can devastate homes and businesses. The professionals at SERVPRO of Kirksville, have specialized training, equipment, and experience that will restore your home or place of work back to the way it looked before or even better!
The first steps for SERVPRO of Kirksville to take your home back to preloss condition.
Step 1: Initial Inspection-
If possible, it’s always good to have your Insurance adjuster present during the first initial inspection but it’s not necessary. We work for you and will work with your adjuster to make the restoration process go as smoothly as possible. It is best if we can all meet at the same time so we can all be on the same page regarding the cleaning and restoration of your home or business. Once the inspection date is set, our Production Manager will meet with you at your home or business to inspect the damages and discuss the cleaning process. They will guide you through step by step, so you know what to expect.
Once the inspection is complete, they will go over the authorization form and a customer information form to be signed prior to beginning the restoration process.
Step 2: Content and Structure Cleaning-
SERVPRO of Kirksville has the knowledge, professional equipment and ability to eliminate all traces of a fire. Besides the easily accessible areas, we also examine wall cavities, ductwork, crawl spaces, and plumbing chases to establish whether they also suffered any smoke or fire damage. We will make sure that all fire damage is cleaned, repaired, or removed and leave your home or business "Like it never even happened." Because that is the SERVPRO way!
After you, the Adjustor and SERVPRO of Kirksville have chosen the correct course for your home. SERVPRO will begin the cleaning process of your home or business. Depending on the severity of damage it may be necessary to box up your belongings and bring them back to our cleaning facility. This enables us to clean your contents in a clean environment while the structure cleaning and demoing is being completed. Once all cleaning is finalized of both the structure and your contents, we will bring your belongings back to your home.
Step 3: FINAL WALK Though –
When the cleaning is complete our production manager will do a final walkthrough to address any questions or concerns you may have. Once that is complete, they will present you with a Certificate of Satisfaction form for you to fill out and sign. Your satisfaction is very important to us and we appreciate any feedback you have regarding your experience with SERVPRO of Kirksville.
It is our SERVPRO goal to ensure that our customers understand the process and are happy they call us to make their loss “Like it never even happened.”

New Year's Fire
1/17/2022 (Permalink)
Happy New Year! 2022 is here, and we hope it’s your best year yet. The holidays have wound down, but if you’re like me, you have a little trouble putting your decorations away. Well here is some motivation for you: Susan McKelvery with the NFPA says, “With nearly one-third of Christmas tree fires occurring in January, prompt removal from homes is critical. ... The longer a natural tree is kept up after Christmas, the more likely it is to dry out and ignite; a dried-out tree can become engulfed in flames in a matter of seconds.” Yikes! While we sincerely hope nothing like this ever happens to your home, if it does, you know who to call. We have 24 hour emergency services and a crew that is trained to know exactly what to do to get your home back to preloss condition.

FEMA Fire Tips
1/17/2022 (Permalink)
Here in Northeast Missouri, we have been getting some freezing cold days! Between the frigid winds and the snow piling up, we’re doing all we can to stay warm and cozy inside. We have fires going in fire places, candles lit, space heaters running full blast. All this, of course, means we have to be extra vigilant about fire safety! Here are some helpful tips from FEMA (for more, visit their website www.usfa.fema.gov/winter): “Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from any heat source like fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators or space heaters. Keep portable generators outside, away from windows, and as far away from your home as possible. Plug only 1 heat-producing appliance (like a space heater) into an electrical outlet at a time. Store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal container, and keep it outside at least 10 feet from your home and any nearby buildings. Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your chimney and vents every year.” We want your home to be as safe as possible, however we know accidents happen and that sometimes these things are just out of our control, no matter how careful. If disaster strikes, we are always here to help!
Fall Fires
9/8/2021 (Permalink)
One of the best fall activities is a cozy bonfire on a crisp, cool night. It’s a great time to hang out with friends, drink some cider and toast some marshmallows. Another part of fall is all those ry leaves. Super pretty, right? But as you probably know, the combination of fire and dry kindling can be a recipe for disaster. Imagine you didn’t get that fire quite put out before heading in for the night. A little breezer blows some leaves onto the embers and bam: a fire starts. While we of course hope nothing like this ever happens to you, we know what to do if it does. Fire damage to your home can be absolutely devastating, and you may not know where to start. That’s where we come in. Our production managers are ready to inspect the damage and quickly come up with a plan of action to get your home back to preloss condition. We’ll work to restore structures and contents, clean smoke damage and dry out any water damage caused from attempts to douse the fire. We’re here to put your mind at ease knowing that you’re in the best of hands, and we’ll work with you to get your home back. We have 24/7 emergency services, so never hesitate to call!

Start the New Year with Safety in Mind.
1/13/2021 (Permalink)
Nearly one-third of U.S. home fires that begin with Christmas trees occurs in January.
A fresh start to brand new year! It is that time of year for the new. While starting your new year, think about what is around you that you may no longer need. With advice from SUSAN MCKELVEY at Nation Fire Protection Association (NFPA.com)
“If you are having trouble parting with your Christmas tree, hopefully this fact will motivate you: Nearly one-third (29 percent) of U.S. home fires that begin with Christmas trees occurs in January. Christmas trees are combustible items that become increasingly flammable as they continue to dry out. The longer you keep one in your home, the more of a fire hazard it becomes.”
“NFPA statistics show that on average each year, one of every 52 reported home fires that began with a Christmas tree resulted in a death, compared to one death per 135 total reported home structure fires. In other words, Christmas tree fires don't happen all that often, but when they do occur, they're much more likely to be serious.”
“At NFPA, we recommend using the local community's recycling program for tree disposal, if possible; trees should not be put in the garage or left outside.”
SERVPRO® of Kirksville wants your new year to start with safety in mind, not overcoming the damage that can be left behind by a fire. When your new year starts out in flames, do not worry we are always here to help. Our heroes are ready 24/7, 365.

What you need to know about Smoke and Soot

What you need to know about Smoke and Soot
While the flames of a fire can cause extensive damage to your home, smoke is also a primary cause of damage during a fire. Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke can greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Kirksville will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Leave it to our professionals to come in and inspect your home for soot damage after a fire. We will be able to use our advanced cleaning techniques, combined with our deodorization tools to return your home to a preloss condition.
If you have any questions about the process of removing smoke odor from your home or business, please give us a call at 660-665-3390 today!

Brookfield Smoke & Soot Damage
10/29/2018 (Permalink)
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
